IMTA Alum Amy Acker Plays in the “Dollhouse“

Mysterious character re-written for Whedon show veteran

I really like television, and I haven't done a whole slew of movies or anything, but I've been lucky with "Alias" and "Angel" and "Dollhouse" now, just working with a group for an extended period of time, to learn and grow with a character. To me, television is where it's at.– Amy Acker

Dollhouse,” the hugely anticipatedseries from “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” and “Angel” creator Joss Whedon, is finally set to burst into living rooms around the world. The sci-fi/thriller series centers around a secret organization that controls "dolls" or "Actives" and programs them to do any kind of required work, after which they get their memories erased and resort to a child-like state waiting for the next assignment. Starring in the recurring role of Dr. Claire Saunders, resident physician at the Dollhouse, is IMTA alum Amy Acker (NY92), who will appear in 12 of the 13 episodes of the first season.

“I'm there to take care of all the dolls,” Acker says about her character. “It's a fun job because I get to see everybody and do a little of everything.  And I feel like I'm there to keep the morality of the Dollhouse in check.” The role of Dr. Saunders was originally written to be a 40-50 year old woman, but Whedon re-wrote the character for Acker after sher ead for him, telling her, “Ultimately I kind of thought you were the right person for it.” She had remained friends with him after “Angel” ended and jumped at the chance to be working with Whedon again. “He's just such a great person and so talented, and it's fun to watch people bring the words he writes to life.”

Joss Whedon loves Acker’s character "because she wears misery and torture on her face literally, and we definitely learn how Claire came to this fabulous career. In the last few eps we get to turn the Acker up pretty high." Acker is equally enthusiastic—but careful in choosing her words—about the show and her role. “I don't want to give anything away, but it's pretty amazing how far the show goes,” she says. “You definitely go way further than you'd ever think from the first episode to the last. It's exciting, and I hope everyone watches until the end because they get more and more exciting.

Acker gained kudos from her roles on "Angel" as "Fred" Burkle and as Jennifer Garner's nemesis on "Alias." She has had guest-starring roles on "Private Practice," "How I Met Your Mother," "October Road," "Law and Order" and "Ghost Whisperer." She recently completed the feature 21 and a Wake-up with faye Dunaway, and is currently filming the TV movie Happy Town with Sam Neill and Frances Conroy.
